The problem with Nemesis isn't *just* that it was a ST2 knock-off but that it also tried to be too many things. It was nothing but an homage to the franchise's history - mentions, in-jokes, a dramatic sacrifice, personal stakes, etc - which is the same reason Die Another Day was crap. I love...

I like Insurrection a lot despite its short-comings. It has my favorite music and theres a good moral quandary made (though perhaps casting Anthony Zerbe as the bad guy Admiral is too on-the-nose, especially since he died the same way in License To Kill!) Generations could've been a truly...

    Then this happened...

Generations did alright. It did about as well fiscally and critically as Insurrection (though Gene Siskle said that Insurrection was his favorite of the franchise). Nemesis was the biggest bomb of the lot. I never cared for First Contact: theres no moral or allegory, its just "Captain Picard in...

    Then this happened...

There was only four movies produced by Berman - Generations through Nemesis. So if you're going to throw First Contact under that banner, you're horribly wrong in your statement either way. FC did very well in theaters, fiscally and with critics.

Sounds to me like the people who are creating that colloquialism are the people who are perpetuating that. I despise Abrams in a form and fashion that might be bad for my health and don't like his films - but the idea that we must throw Successful Franchise A under the bus to save Successful...

    Then this happened...

I've never understood why people say the Abrams films are "too much like Star Wars", as if Star Wars is some sort of insult? (Well, maybe Episode VII)

    Then this happened...

What I want to know about is how it affected the relationship between CBS (Trek TV) and Paramount (Trek Film). Theres gotta be some sort of talking between the two to keep the franchise alive - though its been mentioned that the people at CBS *really* did not care for Abrams's adaptation (likely...

    Then this happened...

Thats a tricky question but we've glimpsed the answer in a way: Kurtzman and long-time writing partner Robert Orci split (professionally) immedeately after Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed at the box-office. Orci has since been chased out of Hollywood like a common pygmy; his attempt to write...

[SPOILERS] Star Wars movie thread... [Don't read this thread if you haven't seen the movie yet]

That was the set-up the whole time - the subtext of the Jedi is that they're fundamentalists just like the Sith - but that Luke's larger rejection of the rules (for lack of a better word?) by embracing the love of his sister, father and friends is greater than an edict from either side. To dump...

I needed to quote this post solely because its the first time in 15 years Quarto and I have agreed on anything.

While I do think bumping the movie back is a sign they want to make a quality product, the age of John Williams has me worried he may not be with us for the next two.

I agree with this completely. The stuff that "fills in the gaps" hold more interest to me than buying the same AAA licensed games from 20 years ago for the third time. (DOS < Win95/95 < GOG)

Theres a longer reply that I won't put here, as I was asked to keep something secret. This will have to do: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Joseph_Williams

Strange but true: the "Jedi Rocks" track (as well as the Ewok Celebration) were originally not going to be changed to CG, but an issue with music rights made it less expensive to do it all over than to pay the person who was holding out.

Don't hold your breath. The point of creating "Legends" was to start anew; they'll never bring back EU as a canonized material.

[SPOILERS] Star Wars movie thread... [Don't read this thread if you haven't seen the movie yet]

I don't see the "split" as anything of particular offense to me. I haven't bothered with Star Wars spin off stuff since 2006 or so and even then, I wasn't reading the novels or comic books with any regularity. There are a handful of things I enjoyed like Shadows Of The Empire, Dark Forces, the...

At the same time, the tribble or Khan thing in Into Darkness left non-Trekkies scratching their head. (Perhaps not the best example given how the writers were fans themselves and tasked themselves to microwave leftovers from Nic Meyer's material?) Its not good-storytelling when you reference the...

The one and only thing I need to know about is the Radio Dramas. They were actually confirmed canon by Lucasfilm prior to the Disney buyout (as they were based on the original scripts and produced by Lucas directly, and provided with all the sound FX from the films to NPR for $1) but haven't...

Abrams likened First Order to "...what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again’” So I was likely projecting that quote a bit. (Though I should also say that the whole "splinter group of the Republic waiting around for the Empire to rearm"...

[SPOILERS] Star Wars movie thread... [Don't read this thread if you haven't seen the movie yet]

The Darth Plagueis story is a great bit of world-building - its a morality fable within the main story, giving greater dimension to the SW universe - but it wasn't meant to be taken so literally as many fans seem to want it to be. It may - MAY - be the Emperor slyly telling us his own backstory...
