    WC1 turned inside out

I always wondered about the spiral galaxy in the background in Wing Commander games--there are only two spiral galaxies that are at all visible to the naked eye from within our galaxy--Andromeda and Triangulum.

A Peek Behind the Wing Commander Curtain (November 14, 2013)

IIRC, the game increased your ship's inertia when they were damaged/destroyed, but not to a debilitating level. While within the storyline they would have to reduce acceleration a thousand-fold to allow the zero-to-400 km/s in five seconds that we see, within the game the loss of the system only...

A Peek Behind the Wing Commander Curtain (November 14, 2013)

High speed turns produce high acceleration in atmosphere because vector and facing are strongly coupled--any turning away from the airstream puts aerodynamic forces on your aircraft that will either force you to turn back into the airstream or else force your vector to change to match your...

Hellcat cockpit in the WC2 style

Even though Kilrathi have the "warrior's honor" thing going, they don't seem to have much of the masochistic "do it the hard way because it's more manly" streak found in say, the Klingons. If they did, then we could say that the use of unguided missiles was meant as a statement of warrior...

Hellcat cockpit in the WC2 style

2 Laser / 1 Particle sounds good--enough to be a credible threat but not enough to overpower the Hellcat. The longer range of the Dralthi's guns then would be a counterpoint to the Hellcat's slightly heavier guns and shields/armor, meaning that a Hellcat would be exposing itself to a couple of...

Best Place to Park a Tarsus? (October 20, 2013)

Given the size of solar systems and the implication within the WC universe that ships can travel at several percent of the speed of light (but not relativistic speed unless they are almost all fuel tank and engines and burn it all in one go), and given what we see in the narrative, it seems to...

Best Place to Park a Tarsus? (October 20, 2013)

It seems that Star Citizen will have your acceleration and turning rate calculated from your thrust and mass (with all components, cargo, etc. having mass), so the heavier you load your ship, the more sluggish you will become. It is hinted that this would make it worthwhile to dump low-value...

Best Place to Park a Tarsus? (October 20, 2013)

Well what I meant by "depth" was that in Privateer there were multiple routes to the same ends. You weren't forced into the above-the-board cargo and mercenary missions--you could be plenty profitable running drugs or committing piracy as a "career". Also, each of the three ships had its own...

Best Place to Park a Tarsus? (October 20, 2013)

Considering how much fundraising you have to do before you can reasonably consider leaving Troy (Jump Drive, second gun, afterburner, Tungsten Armor, Engine Upgrade I, sector maps), most players will be getting quite a few hours logged there. I never cease to be amazed just how much depth...

    Wing Commander re-imagined...

Ooh, I like how the wing-blades are doubled like that, and also the sawtooth-like radiator fins on the inside of the gun barrels.

Roberts Space Industries Event Video Online (October 13, 2013)

The commander might be the same person as the pilot--in 20th century aircraft (including WWII), the Captain is usually the one doing the piloting. I can see such a setup holding as long as the overall crew size is small enough not to need additional internal hierarchy (i.e. all crew report...

Hellcat cockpit in the WC2 style

It looks nice and flies quite well. I like the loadout and stats you went with--it's got just a touch more weapon power, shields, and armor than the Rapier while being just a little slower (speed in between the Rapier and the Sabre). Giving it only short-range guns and thus forcing it to get in...

    Broadsword in the Concordia's Hangar

I do seem to recall Hobbes complaining that the turret in Blair's crossbow was too cramped for a Kilrathi to sit properly, so I can definitely believe that it's a smaller turret than the Broadsword or Sabre turrets.

    Broadsword in the Concordia's Hangar

The Sabre's wings can fold up for storage, much like the planes carried on the WWII aircraft carriers.

Hellcat cockpit in the WC2 style

Statwise I can see the Hellcat as having just a touch more shields and armor than the Rapier but slightly less speed and turn rate (Rapier is 450/1300 while Hellcat is 420/1200)--so it would fall in between the Rapier and the Sabre for speed and turning. For missiles, the WC3 Hellcat has two...

    Broadsword in the Concordia's Hangar

The Broadsword's comparatively huge size is exactly why so much work was put into making the Sabre into a usable bomber and also the development of the more compact Crossbow bomber--more bang per acre of flight deck.

WC1 (probably) perfect score + WC1 SM1 work in progress...

I always loved how the medals were dynamically awarded for completing the secondary mission objectives. It's too bad that the system was dropped for the later games.

    Scimitar WIP

Nice, but I think that Wing Commander's equivalent of the Vulcan guns is the Stormfire Mk. 1 that we saw in WCIV--Pliers refers to it as "old tech, and if the range wasn't so short it would still be in use", so having them on a Scimitar-era craft would be appropriate.

    Star Citizen Caterpillar Flash Sale.

From the cabin layout, it looks like the Caterpillar is made for a crew of six to twelve (given the six bunks, four flight deck seats, etc.), while the Constellation is made for a crew of four to six (Captain, copilot, two turret gunners, P-52 pilot).
