    Wing Commander Flat Universe

I definitely like the visuals here, especially your "parody" of the original Wing Commander box art. I, too, enjoyed ASCII sector and think that a game like you propose would be fun to play.

Travel time between systems and interstellar communication in WC Universe

While in-game the transition is definitely nearly instantaneous, we also saw some scenes in the Wing Commander Academy show where traveling through a jump point could take minutes to hours. I particularly remember an episode where they were scouting a jump point and it explicitly took hours to...

Travel time between systems and interstellar communication in WC Universe

The message buoy from Pegasis station might be due to the Kilrathi jamming communications during the attack (or perhaps they hit the main comm hardware already, and the buoy was a backup system). Anyway, in the games at least, the time to cross a system seems to range from several hours to a...

Travel time between systems and interstellar communication in WC Universe

While passage through jump points is very quick (often nearly instantaneous), travel between the jump point where you enter a system and the one where you exit the system is under normal sublight drive. If the two points are on opposite edges of the system (10 billion km or more apart), then it...

RetroN 5 Plays SNES, S Famicon & GBA WC Console Games (May 4, 2013)

Yeah, back when Nintendo could not cheaply provide software-based regional lockouts, they separated regions by making the cartridge physically incompatible.

Broadsword Bomber Swoops In (May 9, 2013)

Well, the Devastator in WCP had turrets on all sides (port, starboard, aft, dorsal, AND ventral, though you could not manually control the dorsal and ventral ones), but that's the only other player craft with true all-round coverage. I loved the rapid fire of the WC2 turret guns though.

RetroN 5 Plays SNES, S Famicon & GBA WC Console Games (May 4, 2013)

Ah, well the Japanese NTSC cartridges are definitely a different shape from the North American NTSC carts in order to prevent importing.

RetroN 5 Plays SNES, S Famicon & GBA WC Console Games (May 4, 2013)

IIRC there were separate cartridge slot shapes for "Genesis" and "Megadrive" in order to enforce regional incompatibility, thus a device made to play both needs to be able to accommodate both shapes.

Apparently the Kilrathi are actually bears.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

    Worst Mission Ever

IIRC, if you divert 50% of all power to the engines (e.g. ALL of the shield power goes to engines), then you get full speed and acceleration out of your craft in the Pelius missions. Flying a Grathra would be neat--it would be sort of like the Raptor's "little brother", with less speed and...

    Worst Mission Ever

Just an FYI, but if you do as Pliers recommends and divert your useless shield power to the engines, you can bring your speed and acceleration back to normal. Also, I agree with the folks who say that the fly-a-Dralthi missions in SM2 suck. The Dralthi has the shields and armor of a Hornet...

Hellcat in the Spotlight (April 7, 2013)

I like these little snippits of Maniac's autobiography. Who writes them?

    Destroyer question

We must also ask ourselves what role the ship will be fulfilling--is it still acting as a destroyer (i.e. directly attacking other light capships with its own weapons) or are we stripping it down to make it into a pocket carrier? If the former, then the fighter squadron will also be more...

    RSI Vanduul concept art

Well, he did say that he would have set the game in the Wing Commander universe if he had the rights to it . . .

    Destroyer question

Presumably any ship of sufficient size would carry a pair (or more) of shuttles, so a minimal landing bay would be likely ("minimal" as in "have to move each craft out of the way before the next one can land") Some interior space would have to be freed up for the storage bays for the fighters...

    RSI Vanduul concept art

As far as bipedalism goes, any tool-using species is going to need to have something that can do the things that we do with hands--whether it be a set of limbs that are no longer used for walking, or ones that are used both for walking and grasping, or an elephant-like trunk, or squid-like...

    Kerbal Space Program

Yes, a minimum-energy launch window would be when the spacecraft would cross the destination planet's orbit 180 degrees away from the starting planet's position at launch. A minimum-energy flight to Duna would take closer to 180 days than 90 days, and should launch when Duna is a bit more than...

    Catscratch and Vagabond

Well, it had already been established in the WC3 novelization that Vagabond, Maniac, and Blair were the only survivors out of Blair's squadron, so who else would they use? It was either use Vagabond or cast somebody as one of the surviving WC2 characters--there weren't really any other "old...

Pre-plot Privateer Money Making...my most recent path

It really shows just how open Privateer is, that it is completely viable to be a drug runner or a pirate as well as a mercenary or above-the-board merchant.

    Terran Confederation Space Navy

To address the original question on the service branches, the US Army and Navy in WWII each operated their own internal Air Forces (one often hears reference to the "Army Air Force", for example). Carrier pilots were almost entirely Navy personnel. It was only after the war that all air...
