My favorite is still the original WC. I played it first on my Amiga 500. You know, 16 color graphics and in a hard dogfight you had 2-3 fps - like a slide show. Actually the frame rate was only okay when you had no enemies visible on the screen. But who cares - it was still the best space-sim...

Which leads us straight back to the question - is there still life on "Freespace2-WCMod"? Or has the project been canceled? Does anybody know about the status of this mod?

You could use 3D Exploration. Its a pretty fine tool for converting 3d files. I used it to convert TrueSpace files to 3DS and it worked really fine (with textures). You should be able to get a Trial Version on there homepage at http://www.xdsoft.com/.
