New Wing Commander after Secret Ops

I'm actually still kind of annoyed that Arena wasn't released for PS3. I understand not releasing it for PC, especially given the piracy problem, but I hate it when game developers favor one console over another, when the two platforms are essentially equal. I've always been a Sony owner, not...

    Heart of the Tiger inapropiate?

I think you've nailed it. The Tiger's Claw was apparently well known to the Kilrathi, and seen as the lynchpin of Confed's fleet in the area at the time (reference Thrakhath's boast after the 'Claw was destroyed that "without the Tiger's Claw to protect them, my fleet will sweep through the...

New Wing Commander after Secret Ops

Not sure I quite followed all of your post. But if you really want a PC-based Wing Commander game beyond the ones that Origin/EA has released, check out some of the excellent fan-built mods and games that are hosted right here on CIC. Some aren't finished yet (but are eagerly awaited by all...

    TREMAN and Win 7 x64.

I've never used Treman, but I have tried to run the WC1 ship editor that is hosted here under Win7. It is also a 16-bit program. No luck. I think Windows 7 just won't run 16-bit software. Win XP (which is natively 32 bit) could handle 16 or 32 bit, but Win 7, which is natively 64 bit...

Standoff Ep 3 mission path question

Durandal, Do you have you finalized mission trees posted anywhere formal, or are they just hanging around in old discussion board threads? I'm having some issues finding what the final version you've blessed is.

Standoff Ep 3 mission path question

Thanks. I suspected it was the secondary objective that gave me the Sao Paulo. No matter...that's a fun mission (although, even knowing the right strategy, it sometimes is just nearly unwinnable...the starting position of the Grikhath's seems to be randomized, and if they happen to start just...

Standoff Ep 3 mission path question

So I'm playing through Standoff again, and trying to find hidden missions and things I might have missed before. Meaning I'm trying to do both better and worse than I did on my first playthrough. Worse is easy. Better is hard. So I turned the difficulty down when trying to do better to see...

Abandonware and buying WC titles online...can we clarify once and for all?

Terminology question: I know that the CIC has authorization to offer for free download the PC Gamer release of WC1 (so in a sense, WC1 at least can be downloaded for free right here). However, the CIC is very careful to specify that it is *NOT* freeware. Please clarify the definition of...

Abandonware and buying WC titles online...can we clarify once and for all?

I have friends in the games industry (not to the extent that LOAF and some of the others here do, though), and according to them, software piracy is one of the biggest reasons why development of games for PC's has flagged compared to games for consoles. According to my friend, the average new...

    WC1 Ship Editor

Either way would be awesome. When I was unable to get wcview working with KS, I sort of let the project languish, but if you have the ship stats from the game reliably, I'll pick it back up again...

Kurasawa 2 - Your tips and tricks

Hmmm... I guess some programmers took some shortcuts and didn't implement path-intersection detection...just colocation detecation at discrete time intervals... Should have payed more attention to stability limits...

No canonical Confed battleSHIPS...what would one look like?

I had always thought that Confed lost the McAuliffe Ambush because they mis-decoded a Kilrathi message and ended up being outnumbered 2-1. They also had the misfortune of sending battleships up against strike craft with no fighter support? They're lucky that they managed to break the Kilrathi...

    What if??

I think one thing that a lot of people don't realize is the degree to which our relatively active foreign policy stimulates sectors of our own economy, especially in the defense field. After Medicare/Medicaid, the largest portion of the U.S. federal budget is defense. And a significant...

    F-110 Wasp...experimental fighter?

This is true...cloaking is really maximally fun in multiplayer games. However, it was really fun at the end of WC3 to be taunting Thrakhath while cloaked and finally hear his frustrated "Where are you, Heart of the Tiger?!!" It's just too bad that Hobbes was so silent on that final mission.

    F-110 Wasp...experimental fighter?

I think there are ways to make cloaking more fun in a WC-type game; you just have to be clever about it. Some ideas: 1). Limited cloaking time (maybe because of a power draw)...you can cloak for, say, 3-10 seconds depending on your power reserves, but then you're visible and have to let your...

Down under in the WC universe

Funny things you pick up. I just finished reading a travel book about Australia (One for the Road by Tony Horwitz...decent read if you like travel humor) and realized that there are a number of WC locations named after places in Australia. Ayer's Rock is obvious, but Port Hedland and...

Some things I like about Wing Commander 4

I agree with this post, mostly, but I always found the Dragon boring, too. It was too powerful. And it wasn't really a "flyer's fighter"...it required no fancy tactics. One of the things I loved about WC4 was that the game made you fly BW fighters, which were the equal of Confed fighters if...

Strange Idea I had about the Nephilim

Agree with LOAF...they don't just disappear, the game spawns infinite aces that go after one of them until one is dead at each station. Although, I believe the "official" story is that Maniac was one of the three that accompanied Blair and that he survived, even though he was shot down...

Strange Idea I had about the Nephilim

And the "converting" part is a bit like the Borg we see in Star Trek First Contact. In a different thread just yesterday I was wondering, somewhat tongue in cheek, if we ever might see Blair rise again as an infested arch-nemesis, kind of like Starcraft's Kerrigan.

    WC Game Story Arc

I *think* (not 100% sure) if you are very observant, that if you side with Confed and destroy the Intrepid, you can see a wing of Avengers uncloak and destroy the Lexington. It's possible I just imagined this and they actually just spawned, but I could have sworn I heard the uncloaking sound...
