Hmm, I'd say that the british system suffers a lot from the same problems as the american, the best schools i've seen simply offer teachers who can enthuse the children. If a child is interested in the subject, they tend to work harder. Not much to go on though!

dosbox doesnt support the mt32 by default, so don't use the roland option. otherwise, i'm not sure about this, it rings a bell from dos days of yore (never had it in dosbox) but check your memory settings (xms and ems) in the dosbox config.

ddhack doesnt work at all on xp, but mincemeats compatability patches should fix most problems.

Personally I wouldn't get my hopes up about that, GoG don't have a history of making new patches for games, something that has got them in hot water with (for instance) interstate76. Still, would be good to get a copy!

Some time back I worked up a mac emulator and played through swc, mostly to record the cutscenes and enjoy the missions of SM1.5 - I can upload those videos if you'd like? To be honest though, SegaCD's speech puts it all to shame!
