Bengal Class Given the Late Kilrathi War Treatment (December 29, 2024)

Yeah, like I said I don't think it even counts as a criticism: the design brief was "take the Exeter and stretch it out", and it did that. I'd like to see someone try and take on that concept with modern detail, fitting it in between the Exeter and Bengal. Kind of crazy to think that when that...

New Year, New Poll! (January 2, 2025)

15 percent are new? I find that hard to believe. Does that track with your experience? I don't understand how you could be interested in Wing Commander and never have visited this site when it's been around for 25 years and been at or near the top of search results for most of that time.

Bengal Class Given the Late Kilrathi War Treatment (December 29, 2024)

Yeah, I know what the Gettysburg is, I was there when it was first posted. I mean that I think it looks too derivative of other ships. I don't know if I can even call that a criticism because it's exactly what the artist was going for, I just feel personally that big ships should be more...

Bengal Class Given the Late Kilrathi War Treatment (December 29, 2024)

I'm a bit torn on the design used in Saga. From a distance it doesn't have a particularly distinctive shape, it looks a bit too much like someone else's sci-fi spaceship; no wonder it resembles something from another series. It looks more like a Confed ship on closer inspection but then I think...

After Action Report: Starship Troopers (December 27, 2024)

Verhoeven's worry was in his famous words that it would look like a "flea circus", which I can understand because that CGI film I bullied you into watching came off a bit like that, and that was 15 years later. Besides that Verhoeven has an appreciation for practical effects and I imagine that...

After Action Report: Starship Troopers (December 27, 2024)

It's weird to think that Starship Troopers just barely broke even when it released. The film is so beloved now it's hard to believe that it didn't perform well, even if I can remember how unpopular it was on release. I remember Verhoeven and Neumeier saying years later that the film's biggest...

Ship Confusion: Gettysburg and Waterloo (December 22, 2024)

That article seems kind of nebulous in that it lumps together a bunch of designs that don't have much in common other than carrying aircraft, under a name that Google suggests is barely used anywhere else. Even it describes the Invincibles under a separate heading as "cruisers in name only"...

After Action Report: Glory (December 20, 2024)

To me it sounds like a joke playing on the Confederation-Confederacy thing: somebody saw that and thought it would be amusing to slip the name in. Possibly Brooks Wachtel? The script draft is no longer online. I remember reading it years ago but searching the news archive only gives me a link to...

After Action Report: Glory (December 20, 2024)

Something I keep forgetting whenever this topic comes up: there already was a CSS Manassas! And it was the navy's first ironclad. That seems as good a reason to name a ship as any, it just scans oddly because the name wasn't reused repeatedly later, like Virginia or Tennessee (but just like...

Ship Confusion: Gettysburg and Waterloo (December 22, 2024)

Aren't carriers technically cruisers? At least that's what every navy calls them whenever they don't want to say they have them for political reasons: the British with their "through-deck cruisers" and the Russians who call theirs "aircraft-carrying cruisers" so they can get around international...

After Action Report: Glory (December 20, 2024)

It's a town too, isn't it? One with a reasonably large number of notable people, judging by Wikipedia (Wikipedia, always willing to go into the most excruciating detail for the most obscure localities and personalities). So it could support the fiction that's what it's named after, rather than...

Wing Commander Arena End of Life FAQ (June 24, 2024)

It'll only load, apparently. https://github.com/xenia-project/game-compatibility/issues/1719 I mean I can see where he's coming from; the marketing was dreadful and failed to communicate what its reason for being was, to the extent that it even existed at all. Most people probably still have...

After Action Report: 633 Squadron Wrap Up (December 13, 2024)

I remembered doing the same thing in 3DS Max years ago but it was actually for the destroyer! A shame none of the production sketches for the cruiser survived.

Is there any information available on how WC1 & 2 in space gameplay/graphics were created?

I'll get to the rest of this thread at some point but I get the impression that good programmers are becoming rare and so such cheats are becoming the norm, not just for AI but at all levels of design. You want the simulation but it's too expensive both in effort and processing, so you end up...

    Originator [v0.3.07c Released]

Eh, is it really? Rebel Galaxy Outlaw uses the same engine and nobody has ever said that it looks similar.

Is there any information available on how WC1 & 2 in space gameplay/graphics were created?

That's not necessary, the CIC has private copies of the source for both 1 & 2 (though apparently parts of it are incomplete)

    Originator [v0.3.07c Released]

Beautiful! This will be a godsend for the wiki ― we have the booth images for instance but they're screenshots rather than asset rips and they're nowhere near as clean.
